Lubricating system Volvo B18

Dropping oil pressure at warm idle or leakage around the oil filter are classic signs that the lubricating system in a B18 is starting to wear out. The 1778cc five-bearing motor that arrived in the 544 from 1961/62 is durable, but worn oil pump gears and aged gaskets push the pressure down and let oil seep out.

This category includes oil pumps, oil filters, gaskets, mounting kits and washers in several versions – copper washers, spring washers and standard washers – plus a screw for correct installation. It covers both a simpler filter and gasket replacement and a more extensive overhaul where the pump is replaced.

During an overhaul it is worth checking the oil pump's clearance and sealing surfaces against the block before everything is bolted together, so that the correct oil pressure builds up from the first start. Fresh copper washers under banjo bolts and new gaskets reduce the risk of leakage after assembly.
