Play in the steering wheel, knocking over uneven roads, and sluggish response can often point to the front suspension. On the 940/960, MacPherson struts are fitted up front along with rack-and-pinion steering, and the cone-shaped bushings on the control arm rods are a common check point at the front end – they soften over time and can produce vague steering feel long before anything actually fails.
