Sluggish cold starts or a starter motor that just clicks are often caused by a worn solenoid, a bad gear, or the wrong voltage – and the choice is governed by the electrical system. The 544/445 came in different versions with both 6-volt and 12-volt electrical systems, and which system the car has can differ between model years – check which version your car has. This means a starter motor for the B4B/B16 is rarely interchangeable with a B18 unit, either electrically or in the gear teeth meshing with the flywheel. The selection is split by engine family so you land on the right part straight away:Starter motor Volvo 544/445 (B4B/B16)Starter motor Volvo 544/445 (B18)When rebuilding, the solenoid, carbon brushes, and the starter gear itself are the most common points to check.
