A scraping sound from the rear drums or a hand brake that has lost its grip are classic signs that the rear brake needs to be gone over. On the 544 with a B16 engine in the early type, the rear drum brakes are fitted without the self-energizing Duo-servo mechanism that came later – which is exactly why the chassis number determines which parts fit.

When restoring the rear brake, the brake band kit, brake cylinder kit and return springs are typical checkpoints, together with the rubber caps that seal the wheel cylinders. The group also includes a screw, lock washer and nut for mounting, as well as grease for lubricating sliding surfaces during installation. With healthy brake bands and sealed wheel cylinders, the rear brake regains an even grip on both sides, and new return springs release the shoes properly so they don't drag and heat up the drums.
