A smell of gas in the trunk and damp joints around the filler neck usually come from dry grommets, a cracked fuel hose or a vent hose that has hardened over the years. On injected B20E/F engines the Evaporite control also works as a closed system, so even small leaks on the venting side show up as odor and poor return of vapors.
