Front wheel brake Volvo PV 444
Warped or scored brake drums, worn linings and leaking wheel cylinders are classic finds when the front drum brake on a 444 is taken apart. The whole series ran four hydraulic drum brakes, so until disc brakes arrived in 1964 it is drum parts that apply here – and when rebuilding, it pays to replace in complete sets rather than piece by piece.

This group includes brake drums, brake band kits and brake cylinder kits along with return springs, rivets for riveting on new linings, lock washers, grease and rubber caps for the bleeder nipples. A typical inspection point is the bleeder nipples themselves: cracked or missing rubber caps let in dirt and seize the nipple, making bleeding unnecessarily difficult. Always measure the drums against the wear limit before new bands are riveted on – an over-machined drum gives weak and uneven braking no matter how fresh the linings are.
