Gear shift/Linkage Volvo 140 (M40/M41)
Play in the gear lever and a lever that wanders sideways are classic wear symptoms on the 140/164 with the manual M40/M41. It is often the worn ball joint, dry rubber bushings or a shrunken rubber spacer that should be checked before condemning the gearbox itself. When rebuilding the lever mount, the ball joint, screw, safety ring and bushings are typical check points – new material here removes most of the slack.
