Vibrations in the floor and a jolt when engaging a gear often come down to a hardened or cracked gearbox mounting pad – the rubber collapses over the years and lets the gearbox wander. On the 140/164 with the M40 and column shift, the shift mechanism is also mounted up by the steering column, so play in a worn ball joint adds a vague shifting feel on top of the mounting itself.

This group includes the gearbox mounting pad, ball joint and gasket set together with fasteners such as screw, nut, lock nut, wave washer and O-ring. When replacing the pad it is worth checking the O-ring and gaskets for oil leaks at the same time, and renewing the wave washers and lock nuts so the mounting sits correctly and does not work itself loose.
The parts are gathered for the M40 gearbox in the 140 and 164 series with column shift and belong to the power transmission at the gearbox.
