Valve mechanism Volvo B30A

A burnt exhaust valve, rattling valve lifters or play in the valve guides often shows up as poor compression and oil consumption on the straight-six B30A. This category gathers the parts belonging to the cylinder head and valve guides when the engine is to be rebuilt or adjusted.

The group includes inlet valves and exhaust valves, valve guides and valve lifters, a camshaft gear set with thrust flange, plus washers and nuts for installation. The B30A is the carburetor version of the six-cylinder B30 in the 164 series and is considered reliable, but after many miles the valve seats settle and the guides wear oval.

A typical checkpoint during a cylinder-head rebuild is exactly the clearance between the valve stem and guide – too much play lets oil draw past the guide and blue smoke shows up under engine braking. Measure before you regrind the seats.
