A jumping speedometer needle or a pointer that drops to zero is often down to a dry or frayed speedometer cable rather than the gauge itself. That is exactly why the instruments are split by model and year – on the 140 series the early ribbon speedometer was replaced by a round gauge in 1972, and the 164 received an updated instrument panel in 1973, which governs which combi-instruments and sensors will fit.
