Play in the steering wheel, heavy turning resistance, or an intermittent knock usually comes down to a worn steering box or worn joints in the idler arm. On the 544 and 445, the steering switched between different makes over the years, so which box and which arm fits depends on the model, engine generation and model year. Keep in mind that threads and nuts in the steering are often in inches (UNF), so measure your existing nut before ordering.
