Brake drums and inspection covers are also among the parts often replaced at the same time when the rear axle is opened up.
A common checkpoint on this job is exactly that axle play: with the wrong number of shims the bearing is either over-tightened or runs with play, wearing it out prematurely. Always replace the seal at the same time so that differential oil does not migrate out to the brake drum and ruin the lining.
