It is often the nipples, hose connectors and the fuel cap rubber that start to leak before the sheet metal itself gives up.

A common check point: always replace the gasket against the combined tank unit and the fuel cap rubber at the same time as the tank is refitted, otherwise gas will seep out and you get the smell back right away. Also check that the fuel hose has not hardened and cracked at the nipples.
