Rusty fuel tanks, a brittle fuel cap and a tired fuel pump that causes poor cold starts are classic troubles on a 122 that has been standing still. The fuel pump is mechanically driven off the camshaft, and the right pump is determined by whether the car has a B16, B18 or B20 – the engine change to B18 came in 1961, and the B20 was added from August 1968 during the final model years. The estate model also has its own tank geometry that differs from the sedan's.
