When the charging light flickers or the battery never quite reaches a full charge, the voltage regulator is one of the first points to check on a 122 with a DC generator. The relay controls when the generator is connected to the battery, and over the years the contact surfaces become burnt and the spring pressure weak – then charging fails even though the generator is turning.
