A weak start when the engine is hot, falling supply pressure or a buzzing noise from the tank are classic signs of a tired fuel pump in fuel-injected 240/260 models of the E/ET/FT type from 1978 onward. On these systems the pump works against the pressure that K-Jetronic and later injection require, and worn pump wheels or leaking hose connections are felt immediately in driveability.

When replacing parts it is worth checking the condition of the rubber hoses and that the pressure accumulator really holds pressure – otherwise the difficult hot start returns even with a new pump.
