Play in the gear lever and a lever that wanders sideways can point to dry or worn rubber bushings down at the bearing. On the 1800 with the manual M41 gearbox, shifting often becomes spongy once the bushings have aged, and then it rarely helps to just tighten things up – it's the entire bearing that should be freshened up.

This group gathers the control parts around the lever itself. Included are rubber bushings and safety rings for the bearing, screw, nut and spring washer for the mounting, gearbox pad, plus a gear shift lever knob and gear lever gaiter for the visible part above the floor.
During a rebuild, the gearbox pad is a common checkpoint – a collapsed pad gives extra movement and can worsen the feel of worn bushings. If you replace everything in one go, you'll usually get back a precise and short shift pattern.
