Valve mechanism Volvo B18

Tired valve springs and a worn camshaft cause a rough idle, lower compression and a ticking noise from the valve casing as the thrust flange and cam lobes begin to separate. On the B18 with twin SU carburettors this is clearly noticeable on cold starts and pulling power, and at that point it is often the whole valve mechanism that needs to be gone through at once.

Categories

This category gathers the parts around the cam drive and valve actuation on the 1,778 cc B18 engine. The group includes camshaft kits, valve springs, push rods, cam gear sets and thrust flanges, together with washers, screws and the hat plug that belong to a correctly assembled cylinder head.

During a rebuild, the tension of the valve springs is an important check point – weak springs do not seat the valves properly against the seat and lead to burnt seats. If the camshaft is replaced, the push rods and thrust flange should be checked at the same time so that lift height and timing are correct.
