The group includes the hand brake gaiter and gaiter that protect against dirt and moisture, plus the clamp, screw, nut and cotter pin that lock the linkage together. The spacer sleeve and plastic eyelet hand brake lever are among the details that easily wear or develop play and that are often missing or damaged at reassembly. During a restoration it is exactly these small components that decide whether the lever gets a clean, firm pull against the drums of the rear brakes – check that the gaiter is intact and that the cotter pins and nuts are seated correctly before everything is fitted back. Even on a custom build of the 544 it pays to freshen up the hand brake with the right small parts.
