If water settles in the trunk, the sheet metal and spare wheel well start to rust from the inside, and a worn lock cylinder means the key will eventually no longer turn.

A typical check during restoration is to replace the lid gasket at the same time as rust damage in the floor is repaired – this keeps the trunk dry and ensures the newly fitted cardboard panels and cover last longer.
