Wheel bearings Volvo Amazon (B16) (Spicer 4.56:1)
A humming or grinding noise from the rear that changes through corners, or axial play when you rock the wheel, usually points to tired wheel bearings in the rear axle. On early 122 cars with the B16 engine and the Spicer rear axle with a 4.56:1 ratio, the bearings sit on the axle shafts and are sealed against the differential oil – if the seal leaks you get grease and oil on the brake shoes and reduced braking.
