Rattling valves, worn valve guides and blue smoke at cold start are classic signs that the valve gear in a B20E/F has begun to tire. Wear in the guides and valve seats causes compression to drop and the idle to become rough – parts worth going through while the engine is open anyway.

This group includes inlet valves and exhaust valves, valve guides, washers and a thrust flange, plus pushrods that transfer the motion from the camshaft. There is also a camshaft kit and timing gear set for those tackling the entire timing chain at once. The exhaust valves work the hottest and typically wear first, making them a natural check point when reconditioning the cylinder head.
The B20 engines entered the 122 range from August 1968 for the final two model years, and the fuel-injected B20E/F is sensitive to correct tolerances in the valve guides. Measure clearance and flatness before ordering, so the wear parts match the actual condition of the cylinder head.
