Volvo Amazon Hand brake

A hand brake that won't hold the car on a hill is usually caused by stretched or binding cables, worn linkage or incorrect adjustment against the rear wheel drum brakes. On the 122 the hand brake acts mechanically on the rear drums, so the cable tension and lever play determine how well the car stays put.

The parts differ between the engine generations, which is why the hand brake range is divided by B16, B18 and B20:

When restoring, hand brake cables, return springs and adjusting nuts are typical check points when the grip starts to fail.
