Crankshaft Volvo B234

Rising oil consumption, low oil pressure at warm idle or knocking noises from the bottom end are classic signs of a worn crank assembly in the DOHC-built B234 of the Volvo 940/960. Once the engine is split, it pays to replace the rotating wear parts as a set rather than piece by piece, since bearing and ring clearances are linked to compression and oil pressure.

The group includes rod bearings and main bearing set, piston ring set and pistons, plus support plate, flywheel bearing, lock ring and hexagon screw that belong to the assembly. When rebuilding the crank section, the clearances of the main bearings and connecting rod bearings are typical checkpoints – measure against the manufacturer's tolerances before fitting new bearing shells and rings, and check the crank pins and axial positions at the same time. Plastigauge or a micrometer will tell you whether the shaft can be reused or needs to be ground to an undersize.
