Gear box details Volvo 240 (AW71)

Slipping shifts, jerky upshifts or an automatic that no longer holds pressure are often caused by tired seals and springs deep inside the AW71 box. This category gathers wear parts and rebuild details for the three-speed automatic fitted to the Volvo 240 with B21 and B23 engines, where the entire clutch plate and piston assembly needs to be gone through in the event of leakage or poor shifting.

The group includes springs, snap rings, slotted spring pins and screws that hold the packs in place, pistons that control the clutch brakes, along with smaller control system parts and balls that are part of the valve housing regulation. During an overhaul of the AW71, the pistons and return springs are typical checkpoints – when they let go, the pressure builds up too slowly and the clutch starts to slip. Snap rings and slotted spring pins should always be replaced with new ones during disassembly, as they lose their tension and can cause play in the shafts.
