A wandering gear lever, imprecise gear positions or rattling while shifting can point to worn bushings and ball joints in the shift control on a 240/260 with the manual M45 gearbox. When the rubber has dried out and the pull rod joints develop play, it becomes hard to feel the gear position, so the wear parts in the linkage are a common point to check during a rebuild.
