A common checkpoint during a rebuild is the pressed-in bushings in the intermediate lever and link rod: once they go oval, the play travels straight into the gear selection. If you replace the springs and wave washers at the same time, the lever regains its distinct click between positions, and the push button with return spring lets the lock release cleanly.
