A tailgate that hangs crooked, squeaks or lets water in is usually down to tired hinges and dried-out gaskets – common wear points on the 245/265 wagon models from 1980-85. As the seal ages, moisture works its way down into the trunk area and rust can begin to take hold along the lower edge of the tailgate.

When restoring the tailgate it is wise to check the play in the hinges, replace the worn gasket and inspect the cover plate's mounting points at the same time.
