Oil drips behind the pinion flange or grease on the inner brake drum are classic signs that the seals in the ENV rear axle are starting to give up. Volvo switched from Spicer to the ENV hypoid rear axle in 1949, and on the 5.43:1 ratio the pinion and differential seals are worth checking as soon as you see a leak or hear a whine.
