A spongy pedal or dark, old fluid in the reservoir are common things to check when the 850's brake system needs freshening up. Since every 850 has disc brakes all around, the fluid works hard with every braking, and moisture in the system lowers the boiling point – so changing it at regular intervals is good practice.

This category brings together consumables and lubricants for brake service: DOT 4+ brake fluid (glycol-based and compatible with DOT 5.1), copper grease for threads and contact surfaces, and plastilube for lubricating the guide pins and rubber bushings in the caliper. When bleeding the 850, the order is left rear, right rear, right front, left front. Note that silicone-based DOT 5 should not be used – it is not intended for these systems.
