A spongy pedal or dark, old fluid in the reservoir are common things to check when the 850's brake system needs freshening up. Since every 850 has disc brakes all around, the fluid works hard with every braking, and moisture in the system lowers the boiling point – so changing it at regular intervals is good practice.
