A hand brake that won't hold on a hill is usually down to stretched cables, worn hand brake shoes or tired return springs. Since the 850 has disc brakes all round, the hand brake sits as a drum brake inside the hub of the rear disc – the shoes are spread by an expander and adjusted against the drum surface. During a rebuild, the typical points to check are cable free play, shoe linings, expander movement and the threads of the adjusting screw.
