A spongy pedal and dark, old fluid in the reservoir are classic signs that the brake fluid has absorbed moisture. It is hygroscopic and should be changed at regular intervals, since water in the system lowers the boiling point and can cause rust in the wheel cylinders and brake pipes on the 700 cars.
