Valve mechanism Volvo B23

Rattling valves on a cold start, bluish smoke and rising oil consumption are classic signs of worn valve guides and seals in the 2.3-liter OHC engine B23. When the cylinder head is off anyway, it is a good time to go through the entire valve mechanism.

This group includes parts belonging to the valve guide and valve seats, valve adjustment shims for setting the correct valve clearance, plus valve spring washers, spacer tubes, studs and hat plugs. It is precisely the shims that control the clearance on an OHC engine – measuring with a feeler gauge and changing to the correct thickness is the most common task during a cylinder head service.

During a proper overhaul, the sealing surface of the valve seats and the play in the guides are checked before new valves are ground in. Worn guides are often the cause behind oil consumption, so they are worth inspecting at the same time as the seals are replaced.
