A clunk over bumps, sloppy steering or uneven tire wear are typical signs that the ball joints and bushings in the 164's front suspension are worn out. With the classic double control arm (wishbone) design, the wear usually sits in the joint points and rubber bushings, and since the 164 has often been driven hard it shows up as play in the steering wheel.

When refurbishing it is wise to check the ball joints for play, replace aged bushings and at the same time adjust the wheel angles with the correct shims. The rubber bushings of the shock absorber anchorages are a common wear point to inspect at the same time.
