Play in the accelerator pedal, worn ball joints and a control rod that sticks are classic symptoms when the linkage between pedal and carburetor on the B18B/D 220 starts to get tired. The estate model (220) has the same mechanical throttle control as the sedans, but with many small ball sockets and levers it's exactly the play in the joints that makes idle and gas response uneven.
