Valve mechanism Volvo B200

Knocking valve clearance, hardened valve seals that cause oil smoke at cold start, or a timing belt nearing its interval – these are the typical reasons to go into the cylinder head on a B200, the 1,986 cc four-cylinder OHC engine in the 940 series. This category gathers the parts belonging to the valve train and its operation.

The group includes valve adjustment shims and valve spring washers, valve guides, intake and exhaust valves, valve seals, plus the timing belt and belt covers. During a top-end overhaul, worn valve guides and brittle valve seals are common checkpoints – play there lets oil slip past and shows up as blue smoke. If you're replacing the timing belt, it's the right moment to check the condition of the belt covers and the seals at the same time, since the same disassembly is required anyway.
