Hand brake Volvo 940/960 (Live rear axle)
A stretched hand brake cable and a lever that has to be pulled almost all the way up before the car stands still on a hill are the classic signs of a worn hand brake. On the 940/960 with solid rear axle, the hand brake sits as separate shoes inside the brake disc hub, and both cable stretch and a clogged adjusting screw cause the grip to fade over the years.

When restoring, common checkpoints are replacing the stretched cable, cleaning and adjusting the adjusting screw, and checking that the shoes' return springs and splash guard have not rusted. Note that the 940 and early 960 have a solid rear axle – later 960 with multi-link require different parts.
