A dirty air filter and cracked intake hoses often show up as sluggish gas response and rough idle on the early 240 cars with B19A and B21A. On model years up to and including 1978 the intake seal is a common check point – if air leaks past gaskets or a loose hose clamp, the mixture can run lean.

Because these engines differ from the later B23/B230 versions, the chassis number and engine code should be checked before selecting parts, so that the filter element and hoses fit the right intake.
