Handbrake console for Volvo 240, 245, 260, 265 black 1979-

A hand brake cable that binds, stretches or releases sluggishly is a classic issue on the 240/260 – often combined with worn adjustment or a creaking bracket. When the hand brake no longer holds the car on a hill, it is rarely a single fault but a chain of worn parts between the lever and the rear wheels.

This group includes the hand brake cable, brake adjustment, hand brake bracket, push rod and smaller wear parts such as washer, rubber ring and axle. Complete mounting kits gather the small details that easily go missing during disassembly. Since the 240/260 has disc brakes all around, the hand brake mechanism sits inside the drum of the rear brake discs, which makes a properly adjusted cable and a working return movement crucial for the shoes to seat evenly.
During a rebuild, a typical check point is that the cable's pull travel runs freely and that the adjustment can be taken all the way without the cable already bottoming out – otherwise it is time to replace the entire cable rather than over-stretching the mechanism.
