Rusted-through or dented splash plates behind the brake disc are a common inspection point on the 240/260, which of course has disc brakes all round on all four wheels. A worn brake splash guard can knock against the disc with a scraping sound or let gravel and water through to the braking surface – something that should be checked when renovating hubs and discs.
