Rear suspension Volvo 140/164 (1970-72)

Knocking in the rear end over bumps and a rear axle that wanders sideways usually comes down to dry bushings and worn-out bump rubbers. On the 140/164 of model year 1970-72 the control arms and torque rods hold the rear axle in place, and once the rubber loses its elasticity the ride becomes jumpy and tire wear turns uneven.

This category brings together the wear and mounting parts for the rear axle suspension. The group includes bushings, control arms and torque rods along with the bump rubbers that absorb the suspension travel. For the installation there are screws, lock nuts, washers and wave washers that lock the joints against vibration.

During a rebuild, dry or cracked bushings and hardened bump rubbers are the typical checkpoints – it is a good idea to replace the mounting parts at the same time so the joints get the correct torque and the rear end is quiet again.
