Play in the steering wheel, unevenly worn front tires or a squeaking tie rod when cornering are common checkpoints on a 544 or 445 that has covered many miles. The play often develops in the tie rod ends once the dust seal has cracked and the grease has dried out – at that point both the joint and the cone should be checked before the next wheel alignment.
