On late 122 models 1967-70, the rear axle is suspended on longitudinal rods and a lateral guide, and when the rubber has hardened or cracked the axle can wander sideways and make the steering unsteady. The group includes torque rods, individual bushings and complete bushing kits, shock absorbers, plus mounting hardware such as screws, washers, lock nuts and spacers. When rebuilding, a common method is to replace all rod bushings at the same time – new rubber at only one end can hide the fact that the other is also worn. The rod mountings and the upper and lower shock absorber mounts should be checked, since wear here can produce the same symptoms as worn bushings.
