A sluggish brake pedal or a hard brake at cold start can point to a leaking vacuum hose or a vacuum tank that no longer holds vacuum. On the 740/760 with a four-cylinder engine of model year up to and including 1987, the vacuum system supplies the brake booster with vacuum, and a failing pump or cracked hoses are common checkpoints when the pedal feels abnormally heavy.
