Alternator mounting details Volvo 140 (B18/B20)

A squealing belt and a generator that wobbles in its anchorage are classic symptoms of worn mounting parts – often after years of vibration from the B18 and B20 engines. This category gathers the parts that hold the alternator in place and keep the belt correctly tensioned on the Volvo 140.

The group includes the tensioner, screw, nut and various washers (wave washer, toothed washer and plain washer) as well as a voltage regulator and complete generators. Toothed washers and wave washers are worth replacing at the same time as the anchorage screw – they prevent the joint from vibrating loose and the tensioner from starting to wobble. A straight, undamaged tensioner is also a prerequisite for setting the belt tension correctly without the generator bearing wearing out prematurely.

When checking the charging, it pays to look over both the mounting and the voltage regulator, since poor contact and play easily cause varying charging voltage on these 12-volt cars.
