Heavy steering at low speeds, a whining noise when the wheel is turned to full lock, or damp traces of power steering fluid under the engine can point to wear in the servo system. On the 940/960, the power steering pump is belt-driven off the crankshaft, and the pump, the belt and the return path back to the reservoir are all common checkpoints when steering feel has become uneven.
