Broken fasteners, loose moldings and rust that has crept in behind the plate are among the most common complaints when an early 244 is being freshened up. When the anchorages let go, the molding starts to vibrate and can come off completely in the slipstream, while moisture collects in the gap and attacks the plate underneath.

A typical checkpoint during fitting is to replace all fasteners and friction blocks at the same time – old, brittle anchorages crack easily and produce an uneven line along the body. Measure and fit the junctions before pressing the moldings into place, so the transitions sit straight against the door and fender edges.
