Crown wheel/pinion M30 3.91:1 for Volvo

A whine or growl that changes pitch when you switch between gas and engine braking is a classic sign of worn bearings or incorrectly set gear backlash in the rear axle. The job then involves checking the crown wheel and pinion together – and setting the pinion depth correctly with shims before the gear contact can be checked.

This group includes the crown wheel, bearings, shims to set preload and backlash, plus a nut and flange screw for the pinion flange. On the sealing side there's the inspection cover and gasket needed when the housing is opened for measuring and oil change.
When rebuilding the differential, the pinion bearing preload and the contact pattern between crown wheel and pinion are the most important check points – incorrect adjustment causes noise and shortened service life. Always measure with a new gasket under the inspection cover so the housing seals tightly and the oil level holds.
