Differential pinion Volvo 140/164 (Spicer)
Oil drops on the diff housing and a damp flange at the gear are the classic signs that the pinion seal in the Spicer rear axle on the 140 and 164 has given up. Play in the seal often follows worn bearings and an incorrect friction torque on the pinion nut – the leak drains the housing and can in time damage the crown wheel and pinion if the oil level falls.
