Worn play in the hand brake lever, or braking that won't hold the car on a hill, can often point to tired link parts in the center-mounted mechanism on the Volvo 164. The pull rod, eyelet and bushings transfer the force from the lever to the rear axle, and over the years the play becomes noticeable.

This category gathers parts for the center-mounted hand brake design on the 164: pull rods, hand brake lever eyelets and bushings for the linkage, plus the screw, lock nut, spring washer and cotter pin that lock it all together. The hand brake gaiter belongs here too and should be checked, since a cracked gaiter lets moisture and dirt into the mechanism. During a rebuild it's common to replace the bushings and gaiter at the same time to restore a firm lever position.
